Detailed explanations of every feature and function in Nutshell

Settings Tab

Most people build an app with a specific device in mind – for example, a smartphone or tablet. Whilst it’s possible to build an app that works on any device, it’s not so easy to make an app that works perfectly on any device regardless of the screen-size, so it’s better to have an idea of what most people will be using your app on, before you start building.

The Settings tab lets you tailor the App Builder environment to the device you’re building for

When you first create an app, Nutshell will ask you what kind of device you’re building it for, and which orientation; portrait or landscape. Your choice will dictate the size and shape of the screens you add into your workflow, allowing you to build and preview your app in an environment that matches your end-user’s device as closely as possible.

Selecting a device and orientation doesn’t mean that your app will not work on other devices and orientations – it simply allows you see your app in the most optimal context while you’re building it.

The Settings tab allows you to change these settings later, should you change your mind. It’s important to be aware that changing the device size and orientation midway through a build can cause unintended layout issues, which you may need to rectify manually.

The device and orientation you choose can have a big impact on what you can fit on-screen

Nutshell will try to re-create the layout in the new screen size as closely as it can, but it might not always get it exactly how you want it. It’s definitely worth testing your app thoroughly before publishing.
